DESIGN BRIEFS 2018


YEAR 7: CHOOSE ONE OF THE DESIGN BRIEFS BELOW

1.       Lots of plastic bags are clogging our water ways and landfills. Balmoral school is an environ school and we want to play our part in looking after our environment.
TASK: The textiles technology department will like you to design and sew a reusable shopping bag that our school community can buy to use.

2.      Lots of cushions, pillows and devices are becoming part of modern learning classroom environments. Students have the hardest time getting everything out there without dropping it all. How can this problem be solved?
TASK: The textiles technology department requires you to use your creativity to design and sew a study pillow for a year 7 classroom.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL TASKS
A.    Your product must be unique.
B.     You must use applique as one of the sewing skills.
C.     You can only use one fabric for the main bag or pillow cover.
D.    You may use different materials for applique and pockets.
E.     Modify patterns provided.
F.      You cannot do buttonholes.

TASK: The textiles technology department will like you to use your creativity to design and sew an iPad cover or sleeve for classroom or personal devices.

3. The school is a having an end of year picnic. The technology department has lots of oxford nylon fabric from previous year and will like each year 8 student to have a carry-on luggage bag for the picnic.
TASK: The textiles technology department wants you to use your creativity to modify given bag pattern and sew a sample carry-on luggage bag that Year 8 students will like to take on school picnic.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL TASKS
A.      Your product must be unique.
B.      You must use applique as one of the sewing skills.
C.      You must use at least one fastening on the outcome.

Welcome to my class.

"Through discussion comes knowledge.

  Through learning comes understanding."

Technology education in New Zealand explores how, beginning with a need or opportunity, new products and systems are developed and how technological developments impact on our world. It also aims for students (to develop “a broad technological literacy”) to gain skills, knowledge, and understanding that will enable them to thoughtfully live with, critique, and contribute to the technological developments that shape our lives.
The school year has been divided into two cycles. 

CYCLE ONE

 1. Through various learning experiences offered in class, you will explore the performance properties of materials, acquire knowledge, language and skills needed to develop your own technological products or systems in cycle two.

2. You will also explore the characteristics of various technological outcomes:
Year 7 students will identify and describe the links between the physical and functional attributes of  given technological outcomes.
Year 8 students will describe how two technological outcomes with similar physical attributes can have different functional attributes and vice versa. In addition to this, extension students will identify and describe what is “proper function and other function” of various technological outcomes.

You will be required to use previous knowledge and skills especially those gained in Cycle 1 to design and complete a technological outcome that solves a problem or need identified from given design brief.


YEAR 7

CHOOSE ONE OF THE DESIGN BRIEFS BELOW
1.       Research shows that drinking water helps you to think faster, be more focused, and creative so many students are bringing in water bottles into classrooms. Therefore, the textiles technology department will like classrooms to have water bottle holders that students can use. 
       TASK: The textiles technology department wants you to use your creativity to design and sew a water bottle holder that Intermediate students will like.

2.      Lots of cushions, pillows and devices are becoming part of modern learning classroom environments. Students have the hardest time getting everything out there without dropping it all. How can this problem be solved?
TASK: The textiles technology department requires you to use your creativity to design and sew a study pillow for a year 7 classroom.

3.      The school is a having an end of year picnic. The textiles technology department has lots of pucker nylon fabric from previous year and will like each student to have a swimming bag for the picnic.
TASK: The textiles technology department wants you to use your creativity to design and sew a sample swimming bag that Year 7 students will like.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL TASKS
A.      Your product must be unique
B.      You have to use applique as one of the sewing skills.
C.      You can only use one fabric for the main project.
D.     You can use other fabrics already in the technology room, old clothes or scraps of fabric from home for trimmings, pockets and applique if required.
E. You can use fastening if desired but you cannot use a zip or sew buttonholes.


YEAR 8

CHOOSE ONE OF THE DESIGN BRIEFS BELOW

1Balmoral school encourages BYOD and the school has also invested in iPads and other devices for classroom use.
TASK: The textiles technology department will like you to use your creativity to design and sew an iPad cover or sleeve for classroom devices or covers that students will like to buy for their own use.

2. The school is a having an end of your picnic and we will be going to the venue by bus. The technology department has lots of oxford nylon fabric from previous year and will like each year 8 student to have a carry-on luggage bag for the picnic.
TASK: The department wants you to use your creativity to design and sew a sample carry-on luggage bag that Year 8 students will like using pattern provided. You are required to modify the pattern without changing the shape of the bag.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL TASKS
A. Your product must be unique
B. You have to use applique as one of the sewing skills.
C. You can only use one fabric for the main bag and not more than two for the iPad cover.
D. You can use other fabrics already in the technology room, old clothes or scraps of fabric from home for trimmings, pockets and applique if required.

      E. You have to use at least one fastening on your bag or iPad cover.


RESEARCH                                        
DUE DATE: LESSON 3 WEEK 2 TERM 3
Research and modelling are stages in a technological process.
Research and examine existing technological outcomes similar to the design brief you have chosen to work on. You can also talk to other technologists or adults.
Bring to class information on materials used, features, shapes, pictures and ideas that will be useful to you as you design and model your own outcome.

Welcome back to all year 8 students. I look forward to continue teaching you using different soft materials. To year 7 students, I look forward to getting to know each of you and work with you in my room.
The technology curriculum will be delivered using our school model- CIB (Curriculum Inquiry at Balmoral). We will discuss this in class.





CYCLE ONE
1. All students will have the opportunity to develop and demonstrate a range of sewing skills through various learning experiences provided in class.
2. All students will identify a need from a given design brief; find provocation; empathize with client/stakeholders to gather evidence/knowledge and begin to prepare for technological practice in Cycle two.
Extension students will also design and use their own planning tools and also review their progress at each stage.

YEAR 8
3. Students will describe how two different technological outcomes with similar functional attributes can have different physical attributes and vice versa.
Extension students will also describe the "proper and other" functions of various technological outcomes.

YEAR 7
3. Students will identify and describe the links between the physical and functional attributes of given technological outcome.
